Food Allergies

Food allergies involve an allergic reaction to a specific food or class of foods.  Reactions typically occur within several minutes to two hours after a meal and include rash (urticaria), swelling (angioedema), bronchospasm or shock (anaphylaxis).  It is diagnosed by correlating a patient's history with appropriate testing performed by a qualified allergist.  Upon identification of the specific food, avoidance strategies to prevent future exposures are reviewed, and the patient is provided with life-saving emergency medications.
