Insect Allergies

Insect allergies affect millions, causing reactions from hives to anaphylaxis after stings by bees, wasps, hornets, or fire ants. Learn about symptoms, emergency care, and how venom immunotherapy can provide lasting relief and protection.

Insect Allergies: Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention

Insect sting allergies affect millions of Americans and can lead to life-threatening reactions. Stings from honeybees, wasps, yellow jackets, hornets, and fire ants are the most common culprits. For those sensitive to insect venom, venom immunotherapy—a 98% effective treatment—can be life-saving.

Symptoms of Insect Sting Allergies

Allergic reactions to insect stings vary from mild to severe, with symptoms including:

  • Mild to Moderate Reactions: Hives, itching, and swelling beyond the sting site, abdominal cramps, nausea, or diarrhea.
  • Severe Reactions (Anaphylaxis): Chest tightness, difficulty breathing, throat swelling, dizziness, sharp blood pressure drops, unconsciousness, or cardiac arrest.

Individuals who have experienced a reaction are at increased risk of future, potentially more severe, responses.

Emergency and Preventative Treatments

  1. Emergency Treatment: Immediate medical attention is critical for severe reactions. Treatments may include epinephrine (EpiPen®), antihistamines, corticosteroids, oxygen, and intravenous fluids.
  2. Preventative Treatment: Venom immunotherapy desensitizes patients by gradually exposing them to increasing doses of venom, lowering their sensitivity and risk of severe reactions.

Avoiding Insect Stings

The best defense is prevention. To reduce your risk of stings:

  • Wear closed-toed shoes outdoors, especially on grassy areas.
  • Avoid open beverage cans and keep food covered outdoors.
  • Skip bright clothing, flowery patterns, and sweet-smelling products like perfumes.
