For individuals managing allergies, allergy shots (immunotherapy) may be an effective treatment option to consider. While the idea of regular injections may not be appealing, the long-term relief from allergy symptoms can make this approach highly beneficial.
Immunotherapy Services at the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center
Immunotherapy, or allergy shots, is a highly effective treatment option designed to help you manage your allergies. Working much like a vaccine, immunotherapy gradually reduces your sensitivity to allergens, providing long-term relief from allergic symptoms.
What is Immunotherapy?
Immunotherapy is a treatment program that uses allergy shots to reduce sensitivity to environmental allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and insect venoms. It involves receiving injections with small amounts of allergens to gradually build tolerance. Over time, these injections help your immune system “ignore” the triggers, reducing the severity of your allergic reactions.
How Does Immunotherapy Work?
By regularly exposing the body to small amounts of allergens, immunotherapy helps the immune system build tolerance. It stimulates the production of antibodies that block allergic reactions. As treatment progresses, the frequency of injections decreases, and patients typically achieve significant symptom relief after 3-5 years of therapy.
Treatment Process
- Initial Phase: Injections are given once or twice a week with low doses of allergens, increasing in strength over time.
- Maintenance Phase: After 6-9 months, treatment shifts to once-a-month injections, where the highest dose of allergens is administered.
- Duration: Most patients continue treatment for 3-5 years, with significant long-term benefits.
Side Effects and Safety
While immunotherapy is generally safe, some patients may experience mild side effects such as local itching, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Rarely, patients may experience more severe reactions, which are promptly treated in our office. Your allergist will carefully monitor your progress and ensure the right treatment is given.
Pregnancy and Immunotherapy
For pregnant women, immunotherapy is not usually started, but if you are already on maintenance therapy, it can be safely continued during pregnancy with guidance from your allergist.
Patient Responsibilities
To ensure effective results, it’s important to maintain a consistent schedule of injections and communicate any changes in your symptoms or medications. Regular attendance is crucial to prevent setbacks in treatment.
Allergy Medication During Treatment
Many patients may still need to use allergy medications for the first 3-12 months while immunotherapy takes effect. Your allergist will help manage your medications to ensure the best results.
Effectiveness of Immunotherapy
Studies show that immunotherapy is highly effective, with 80-90% of patients experiencing relief from allergic rhinitis symptoms. Effectiveness is even higher for insect venom allergies, with a success rate of 95-98%.
